There will be a public defense for Prof. Frederick Namenya Were’s Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) on Friday, September 17, 2021 from 2.00 pm.
Professor Fred Were has been a teacher at the UON since 1994, a global and national child health advocate from 2000 and versatile researcher with outputs in perinatology, neonatology, child health, immunization, infant nutrition and advocacy. In addition, he served as Dean School of Medicine (2014-2018) doubling as Acting Principal, College of Health Sciences (2017-2018). From 2002 he focused his energy on health systems research with a goal of improving the care of children admitted in Kenya’s primary referral health facilities then called District and Presently County Hospitals. He was enthused in this direction upon realizing that childhood mortality in Kenya had continued increasing relentlessly from 1990 to 2000, making the country precariously placed as the world commenced working towards the realization of the MDGs.
